Furney is James Fearnside, aged 30, based in Aylesbury but born in Bradford. He first got into dance music by listening to mixtapes from the early acid and hardcore DJs kindly supplied by his older sister. As these DJs moved into drum & bass James followed them and his sister has clearly been a big influence. “I started DJing because she used to make me spend money on all these records, I didn’t have a clue what I was buying but she used to point all the tunes out to me. I was always fascinated by home-produced music too and an Atariand an Akai were the next things to get if you already had Technics and wanted to be taken seriously.” Describe the Furney sound, not so much in terms of genre but the kind of moods and feelings you’re trying to create: “I like the mystical, dreamy vibe, music that makes you think about things or feel a certain way, or puts you in a different place, rather than something that’s easy to dance to on drugs. Music with a bit of stickability.”

James’ early releases came ot on labels like Big Bud’s Sound Traz and Super8sound imprints as well as Advanced Recordings and Deep Kut run by Total Science. “I think a lot of the labels heard my name through LTJ Bukem, he was the first person I would send my tracks to and in turn he would share them with other DJs he thought might like them.” When a talented young producer who’s already cut his teeth with some well received releases joins forces with one of the iconic labels in drum & bass, you know there’s going to be sparks. That’s exactly what’s happened when Furney & Good Looking records got together and this looks set to run and run. Furney’s debut release for a revitalised Good Looking was ‘Drum Tools’ in collaboration with MC Conrad which appeared on the other side of LTJ Bukem’s first track in three years, ‘Switch’. Next up was ‘Pipez’ coupled with ‘Leap of Faith’ by Utah Jazz, both tracks will feature on the ‘Bukem in Session ‘ DVD recorded live at Exit festival in Serbia.

“Pipez is a re-rub of and old Jack Smooth track from 1994. I loved the elements so much I decided to re-work them to today’s tempo for a bit of fun. Bukem loved it so much he played it in every set for a year and then got the backing from Jack Smooth to put it out.” Then followed ‘Distance’, coupled with Soulmatic’s ‘Self Belief’. with it’s crisp production and driving bassline, ‘Distance’ is a perfect example of why Furney’s productions have become such a big hit on the dancefloor. It’s small wonder, therefore, that Bukem has got him involved with Good Looking. ‘Distance’ is a little number I knocked up with Herrick. It has a very Rhodes piano groove with chipmonk house vocals – it’s nothing new sounding but it moves the dancefloor.” Finally, what do you hope you will be doing in five years time? “I hope to have left my office job and be doing something musical with my day-to-day life rather than squeezing it around a nine-to-five.

Submorphics (Greg Axelrad) creates deep ocular future funk, with parts retro soul, Detroit/Chicago synthentics, jazz, film soundtracks and indie vibes infusing his harmonies.Beginning on the humble local scenes of Detroit and Chicago, Submorphics has since DJ’ed in nearly 40 cities, headlining major gigs at Fabric in London, and across Europe and North America. While he is on the decks, Submorphics sonically alloys disparate styles; the grimy and the smooth, the hypnotic and the astonishing. In the past five years his fluid musicality has been embraced by DJs Fabio and LTJ Bukem, with tunes like “Miles Ahead”, “Step in the Spot ft. Selfsays”, “Mellow Madness”, “Workitout,” “Summer Soul” and many more receiving heavy play on BBC Radio One and clubs internationally. Celebrated primarily for his soulful drum and bass sounds, Submorphics has diversified his repertoire, publishing a plethora of emotive bass music in the 110-140 range. The eclectic musician has also taken on the role of producer for vocalists Armanni Reign and Christina Tamayo. Submorphics exploded into 2012, as Hospital Records released the massive Camo + Krooked- Change Me (Submorphics Remix) on the Between the Lines Remix CD (NHS206). Subsequently, releases on Drum & Bass Arena and Rubik Records added to his impressive discography.

In 2013, Submorphics has stepped it up, with high-profile releases on Innerground and Good Looking Records igniting the DnB world. “Summer Soul,” on Innerground became a scene anthem, with heavy play from DJs across the musical spectrum. It was released on Innerground b/w the mighty Calibre’s remix of Marky & S.P.Y’s seminal “Yellow Shoes.” Following this was the smooth and uplifting gem “Hazel Street” on Innerground’s ‘Future Classics’ EP. On the very same day, LTJ Bukem released Submorphics “Cosmic Blue” on vinyl on Good Looking Records. As if this wasn’t enough, late Summer/early fall sees the release of Calibre’s remix of Submorphics- Organ Grinder, ‘Forgotten Dreams” on Good Looking Records’ ‘Collectivism’ CD, and the harder-edged soul tunes “Hurt so Bad” and “Burning Love” on Liquid V.

Never resting their laurels Shogun Audio have been quick to recognise a bright future for the duo and are now very proud to announce the exclusive signing of the newly named Technimatic to the re-launched Sgn:Ltd imprint. Already with their next single lined up for October 2012 you can expect to be seeing and hearing a whole lot more from Technimatic over the coming months and years as they join the ranks of the one the biggest bass labels in the business.

The masses need to know that this is our side,” he states. “I’ve heard this statement: Drum ‘n’ bass is the first music that came out of England that was truly from the streets, a London ghetto boy type music. Some people think of Peckham as the ghetto. I’m not representing that ghetto, but I’m representing it as a whole sound. I want people in the world to know that even the ghetto has an artistic impact.”

“In time, there will be younger MCs who will take over from the older generation of MC who have been out there,” he says. “I’ve been doing it so long, it would be such a hard fall to just totally turn my back on the game. I want to have some sort of artistic impact, even if I’m not going out on the streets or playing. When I do come out, it comes correct mmediately. There is some wonderful talent out there. If everybody could see that, this music could be as big as hip hop. Right now, I’m just MCing. The deal is getting everybody hooked. I want everybody to be as hooked in this music as I am hooked in this music.”
